While clicking around on Youtube I came across this nice video (it’s more a slideshow than a video actually).
It shows 28 years of computer “desktops” in 1:17 minutes:
Two questions came in my mind:
What will KDE look like in 28 years? Will we look back at our 2009 desktops in the same way as we look back now? (And: Will our children get the same feeling of getting old when they see such a video in 2039?
)
No answers here.
Do not forget about the law of accelerating returns.

I want 3D!!! like ubiquitous BumpTop, 3D visualized filesystems like Hackers movie hopefully by then there will be crisp holographic displays and 3D mouse peripherals…
It’s time for 3D. 2D and 2.5D is getting old

It’s amazing how fast the visual progress speed of KDE is in contrast with Windows.

What strikes me most is that once the idea of windows has been introduced, no ‘real’ groundbreaking changes have been made. Perhaps windows just work best, perhaps there is noone who found the ‘ideal’ GUI yet…

In 30 years, hopefully the computer will have reached its true potential.
Computers should be invisible, they should arrive when you need them, do what you want them to do, and then disappear.
The way I visualise it is this: you’ll walk in the door and say, ‘hello <computername’ and a HUD will instantly ‘appear’ on the closest flat surface (projection or hologram) and you’ll be able to briefly interact with it, and then it will disappear for you - getting out of your way and letting you live life.
